It's still up in the air how many parking spots Oregon Street will get back. The street lost 21 parking spaces after reconstruction on the first part of the street concluded. Prior to construction, city leaders said the loss of parking would be minimal. Oshkosh Common Council directed staff to develop a compromise between two options presented at Tuesday's meeting.

The Rental Housing Advisory Board is looking for public input on a revamped rental inspections program. The board will hold a special meeting Oct. 2 to gather public input for the development of a new rental inspections program. A presentation on the options will also be available. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in Room 404 of City Hall, 215 Church Ave.

The School District of Omro has filed a temporary restraining order against a member of its board. Kelly Rieckmann, the superintendent of the district, successfully petitioned the court to file the order against board member Joan Beem. Rieckmann's reasons given were "cyberbullying," harassment of employees in their offices and refusing to leave the premises of another board member's home.

Winnebago County's airport will move forward on two taxiway projects that leaders hope will bring in more aviation businesses. Wittman Regional Airport, off of West 20th Avenue, will begin the design stage for a reconstruction of a significant portion of one of its main taxiways and the addition of a connecting taxiway to the nearby Aviation Business Park.

Oshkosh Corp. has hired a past adviser to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as its lead government liaison. Tom Hawkins, who most recently served as national security adviser with McConnell's office, will take over as senior vice president of government relations, the Oshkosh-based defense contractor announced Monday.

In 1928, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles opened shop in Oshkosh. The new headquarters was large — two stories and a basement — and ornate. Exposed beams jut out near the ceiling on the second floor, decorative trim lines the upper balcony of the ballroom and chandeliers hang throughout the building.

OSHKOSH - A month after getting $200,000 less than anticipated in state funds for Oshkosh Avenue improvements, the city more than made up for it Tuesday with a lower-than-expected bid for the project. City Manager Mark Rohloff said he was pleased with the outcome, as the original estimate for the construction cost was around $3.7 million.

OSHKOSH - What's better than having a beer outside on a warm summer day? Having beer outside on a warm summer day while exercising, of course. Oshkosh may be the next Wisconsin city to allow "party bikes" to pedal freely on its streets, if the Oshkosh Common Council approves an ordinance at its next meeting.

It's been raining a bit in Wisconsin, if you haven't noticed. Floodwaters flowed throughout the Fox Valley last week, and tornadoes touched down in multiple counties in the central and eastern parts of the state. Oshkosh's South Park, recently overhauled to hold more water in its lagoon system, was one such area.

The city is getting some help to connect the Oshkosh Riverwalk to the Wiouwash State Trail. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation awarded Oshkosh a Transportation Alternatives Program grant of over $255,000 to fund construction of a trail through Rainbow Park near the site of the new Oshkosh Corp. global headquarters, the state agency announced Thursday.

Summer's wrapping up. On Tuesday, students will return to school. Kobussen Buses, the company that operates the district's busing program for the Oshkosh Area School District, ran practice bus routes Tuesday to help foresee any potential problems with their routes throughout the city. This is the first year the company did a practice run.

OSHKOSH - Sunnyview Expo Center is slated to expand after the Winnebago County Board of Supervisors approved a land purchase. The $175,000 purchase will add 20 acres to the site, which will go toward increasing parking and camping areas. It was approved by the board on Tuesday. County Executive Mark Harris told the board that the county does not generally approach landowners for a potential purchase if the land isn't listed already, as the act of doing so triggers eminent domain, so movement on this land was triggered by the land being put up for sale.

OSHKOSH - Movement has begun on a proposal for new assisted living facility on the city's north side. The Oshkosh Plan Commission approved a preliminary plan Tuesday for the community-based residential facility, a one-story building in the 3000 block of Jackson Street, that would consist of 52 rooms.

The incumbent Winnebago County clerk of courts is one of only a few in the state who is also a licensed attorney. She's served for six years in her position — two in an appointed capacity after the previous clerk moved to the Wisconsin Supreme Court and four after being elected. "I was practicing law for about five years before taking this position ... so I have the law aspect, which is extremely helpful," she said.
